Building the Survival Lounge at the TU Berlin workshops, Summer 2020

The Survival Lounge Project at the TU Berlin

A project for a student-run Survival Lounge according to Sara Ahmed, taught by Sarah Rivière & Hermann Schlimme
Institute of Architecture, Technical University, Berlin

The Survival Lounge seminar series gave architecture students a window of opportunity to raise their voices for change. Together, Masters and Bachelors students designed, built and inhabited intersectional feminist Survival Lounges. This reflected their wish for a supportive place of student exchange, feminist education, and mutual care and empowerment. The Survival Lounge seminars were designed to be intersectional feminist leaning spaces of creative exchange.

As one student wrote: “This course is my Survival Tool... it is emancipating!”

Two Survival Lounge Publications are available both as books and as free downloads.

The Designing the Survival Lounge publication by Students of the TU Berlin with Sarah Rivière, Hermann Schlimme & Helle Schröder describes the design history behind the creation of the lounge. It tells the story of a group of people who worked collectively to design a Survival Lounge for their fellow students during a digital summer semester in 2020. It also gives an insight into the practical experience of an intersectional feminist design process.

Despite being physically separated, each behind a screen and in the middle of a pandemic, we united all our voices in this project, together more than ever.

This publication describes the design process creating an intersectional feminist Survival Lounge (after Sara Ahmed). The Survival Lounge seminar series was set up at the Chair of History of Architecture and Urbanism (FGBSG, Professor Hermann Schlimme) as an opportunity for students to design, build and inhabit their own Survival Lounge as a real and much-needed space of intersectional feminist exchange.

The Survival Lounge had been designed and constructed. It was ready for inhabitation, but in Summer Semester 2021 we discovered that, although complete, the Lounge could not be installed for the FRAU ARCHITEKT*IN exhibition. So, instead, feminist design went online, moving into the male-dominated space of digital programming to create another Survival Lounge.

The digital results of the this third seminar series, Inhabiting the Survival Lounge, can be accessed online here
